As we cruise into spring, the warm weather reminds us that boating season is about to begin. Don’t let your thoughts of good times and relaxation on the water distract you from that fact that hurricane season also looms in conjunction with the warm weather. Start early with your preparations and planning so that you can relax and enjoy your time on the water.
It’s important to have an updated inventory checklist of everything on your boat. If you have a list from over a year ago, it’s a good idea to review it and make any changes necessary. You should update your list at least once a year, if not immediately following a change of equipment or furnishing. Documenting your belongings with digital photos or video is the best way to go.
If you keep your boat in a marina, familiarize yourself with their particular hurricane plan and any policies that might go along with it. Some states allow marinas to order all boats off the property in the event of a storm. If you are a patron of one of these sites, have a plan of removal in place. If your marina allows you to keep your boat there during a hurricane, be sure you have extra ropes and bumpers and any other necessary equipment to secure it properly in it’s slip. It’s not a bad idea to do a little research into the tide schedule and flood zones of the area as well.
