Choosing The Right Surfboard For You

Purchasing a new surfboard can be extremely expensive, but you can alleviate this monumental cost. All you have to do is a little research and see if you can find a used surfboard from your local surf shop or on the internet through auctions. When you buy boards from previous owners you can save hundreds of dollars and still be able to get the same benefits. However, if the board is “too used” then you will end up purchasing another surfboard sooner than you might think.
Whenever you buy a used surfboard, always remember that there are rules that you should follow in order for you to really get your money’s worth. Always scour every inch of the surfboard you plan on purchasing before you actually purchase it. You have to remember that any dings in the surfboard should have been repaired. You should also feel all over the surfboard especially over the spot where the dings were repaired. What you are looking for would be soft spots.
Soft spots will mean that the foam inside have rotted from water seeping in. This is not a good thing and you are better off with another board. Also, you need to look for the amount of ding repairs. If the board has a lot of it and even if the repair job was done quite well, the amount of dings can mean that the board is too lightly glassed, which is also not cool.
If by chance you find a repair down the length of the board it means it has been cracked. It’s possible that if you purchase this used surfboard it will crack again, except this time you will be riding it. You definitely don’t want it to happen to you.
It’s also possible that the board is discolored. Even though it’s not the coolest looking board, it doesn’t mean you won’t be able to ride it. What it comes down to is this is more cosmetic so it won’t actually hurt the overall performance.
Be sure to check the fins as well. If there are any cracks around the base it’s because the fins are glassed on, which are quite expensive to repair. Then again, if you can remove the fins you should think about checking the boxes. It’s possible that cracks, water seepage, and even stripped shrub screws could be issues. The boxes themselves are expensive to replace as well, and we’re sure you don’t want to spend money on these repairs.
Natural wear and tear will also occur, and as long as you repair them soon after they surface, it won’t be a big deal. Those who own a used surfboard will find that it eventually loses its flex characteristics. This won’t be a huge issue, and it really won’t make that big of a difference.
The best deal that you can get for a used surfboard is getting one that has hardly been used. The best used surfboards that you will be able to get are from people who didn’t see the board they purchased as a perfect fit for them. They will want to get rid of the board fast in order for them to purchase a better board that is perfect for them. Who knows? Maybe the board that they didn’t like would be perfect for you.
The key to finding the best surfboard is by shopping around. It is really not recommended to purchase one over the internet as you will never be able to see it up close to examine it unless you buy it. If done right, buying a used surfboard will definitely save you a lot of money.
