What's the most beautiful town to stay to visit the barrier reef. (I'm not a fan of Cairns)?

My sister is coming to visit from the UK with her 2 girls (5 and 13) in August. They want to rent a self-catering place for a week in Queensland with a view to visiting the barrier reef at least 2 days. I’ve stayed at Mission Beach before and liked it but the reef near there was not the best and it’s a long drive to Cairns. Port Douglas is nice but expensive. Has anyone any suggestions? Medium budget. They like nature, wildlife and less commercial things. Suggestions as to location or specific rental places all welcome.

The Fun You Can Have On Top Of A Skimboard

There are quite a lot of various sports that we all just love while being out in the water, and should you like being on top of any waves and using the waves from the ocean then you will surely enjoy standing on top of a skimboard, which is much like surfing, but instead of riding a wave you will be skimming on top of the water.

One way that skimboarding may differ from surfing is the fact where you would be using the water from the ocean as it will recede instead of the waiting for the waves to move towards the beach. When surfing you are out in the ocean waiting for just the right kind of waves that you can ride on that you take you right to shore.

This is a very easy sport to be involved with as all you just need to do is to catch just a small amount of water from waves that are receding back out in the ocean which is when you shall be using the board to be skimming the surface of the water.

If you have never done this before you will find it quite easy to learn. You only need to just wait on shore until the waves come crashing in towards you.

Then as the water from the waves begin to recede it is then that you want take the board and while you are running out in the water from an angle just thrown the board down right into the water.

Now as the board begins to slide across the waters surface, you then must jump or step onto the board sideways and then just use your momentum and begin to balance yourself so to keep moving forward. This can be very enjoyable even if you do not learn any tricks, you can still have hours of fun.

Have you heard about the latest and greatest craze known as skimboard surfing? Get the low down exclusively in our skimboard overview.
